Stanley’s Dog Training Glow-Up

Stanley, a lovable and affectionate Pix/Basset Hound mix, brings so much happiness to his family. Living in Rio Rancho with two adults, a lively 3-year-old, and another dog, Stanley’s days are full of energy, cuddles, and, unfortunately, a few challenging behaviors.

Addressing Stanley’s Struggles

Stanley’s energy and affection were undeniable, but his family faced several challenges. Walks were stressful due to his relentless leash pulling, and his barking at passersby turned quiet yard time into noisy disruptions. 

Guests were greeted with jumping and barking, and basic commands like “down” and “stay” needed work. Adding to the stress, Stanley’s marking inside the house required immediate attention to help restore harmony at home. These challenges are common among dogs, but with the right guidance and consistency, they can be addressed effectively. 

A Tailored Dog Training Approach

Stanley’s loving nature made him eager to learn, and we tapped into that with a mix of food rewards and affection-based training.

Leash Training

Using a no-pull harness and treats, we taught Stanley to walk calmly beside his owners, transforming stressful walks into relaxed and pleasant experiences. This not only improved Stanley’s behavior but also strengthened the bond between him and his family during their outdoor adventures.

Barking Control & Recall

To curb barking at the fence, we taught Stanley a reliable recall, ensuring he would come when called. Pairing this with a “quiet” command helped reduce unnecessary barking both outside and at the door.

Place Command for Door Greetings

Teaching Stanley the “place” command gave him a designated spot to stay when guests arrived or when the family needed space.

Marking Behavior Management

 We recommended supervising Stanley closely and limiting his access to certain parts of the house. Although his family opted not to use a bell system to signal when he needed to go out, the increased supervision greatly reduced marking incidents.

Stanley’s Transformation

By the end of his training, Stanley had transformed into a calmer and more cooperative dog. His leash manners improved dramatically, making walks enjoyable for his owners. The recall and quiet commands helped minimize his barking, and the place command brought peace to the home during guest visits and family playtime. 

While marking required ongoing management, his owners felt more confident in maintaining a harmonious environment for everyone in the household. Stanley’s story highlights the importance of consistent training and professional guidance for addressing behavioral challenges.
