Does your dog turn your kitchen floor into a small lake when she drinks her water?
This is a common problem. Some dogs with longer ears, such as Bassett Hounds may dip them in the water dish and drip all over the floor. Some dogs, who are more likely to slobber more, like a Bulldog or Bloodhound, will just pour like a faucet. Some dogs are just a little weird, like my dog, Chloe. Chloe used to put her whole face in the water dish whenever she took a drink, then when she pulled her face out, water went everywhere!
While you can’t train your dog to stop slobbering water all over the place, there are a few things you can do to minimize or stop all that water from turning your kitchen floor into Lake Michigan.
- Put the water dish on an absorbent mat. One good option is called “Soggy Doggy Slopmat Microfiber Placemat”. While this may help, heavy slobberers will still trail water away from the mat and onto your floor. It’s definitely worth a look though. - Try an elevated water dish. When you put a water dish on the floor, your dog has to put his head down to drink. When he lifts his head up he will be more likely to spill water out of his mouth. *Amazon.com has several different styles of elevated dishes to choose from. - My favorite is a specialized water dish called a *“Slopper Stopper”. The Slopper Stopper is what I personally use for our dogs and I can tell you from personal experience that it works great. It is designed in such a way so your dog won’t be able to get her ears in the water. Not just that, but she won’t be able to load up her face with water, which nearly eliminates the water that will get on the floor. Click here to see exactly how the Slopper Stopper works.
While I strongly recommend the Slopper Stopper, any of the three above solutions will help minimize the amount of water your dog will get on your floor.
